Website Terminology

We are aware that when all you want is a website to gain more customers, website companies tend to baffle you with strange terms. We have decided to list a few of these terms which you may come across and explain them in plain English.

  1. Website Design
    This is your website that is displayed for you and your customers to see. It has your text, logo and colours to attract your targeted audience.
  2. Website Hosting
    This is the computer where your website is stored. It is permanently switched on and connected to the internet so that your customers can see your website 24 hours a day.
  3. Domain Name
    This is the name of your website that is unique and allows people to view it. An example is bbc.co.uk the name of the bbc website. When creating a new website it is important to chose a name that reflects your business, so that people can easily identify you. This name must be unique so that it can’t be used by anyone else.
  4. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
    It is a method which allows Google and Bing to understand your site. This is essential to allow your customers to find your site as most internet users use a search engine to find information they are looking for.
  5. Social Media Marketing
    This is basically reaching your customers through Facebook, Twitter and Google+ by adding posts about your company, products or special offers. Using social media for marketing can enable business to further their reach to more customers.
  6. Responsive design
    With so many different devices with different screen sizes, it is essential to ensure your website is displayed correctly. A responsive website will automatically fit the device that it is being displayed on.
  7. Blog
    A blog (also called a weblog or web log) is a website consisting of entries (also called posts) appearing in reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first. Basically a list of articles that your customers will find interesting, you are reading our blog now.
